Kenya recently approved national performance trials for cassava that has been genetically modified to resist the destructive cassava brown streak disease. How was the new crop developed? What will its introduction mean for the farmers who grow this staple food crop? What steps must be taken before farmers can access this improved crop? In this session, Kenyan journalist Joseph Maina will interview a scientist and cassava plant breeder with the Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and Mrs. Jane Wainaina, a cassava farmer in Murang’a County in central Kenya who chairs a community group that focuses on cassava farming in her region.
