Dr. Reynaldo Ariel Alvarez-Morales

Dr. Reynaldo Ariel Alvarez-Morales has been the director of the Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Unit of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV- Irapuato) and a researcher with the Department of Plant Genetic Engineering for more than 25 years.
Originally from Mexico City, he earned a doctorate in bacterial molecular genetics from the University of Sussex in Great Britain, and served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Federal Polytechnic Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. Upon his return to Mexico, he joined CINVESTAV to work on the molecular genetics of plant-bacterial interaction.
Dr. Alvarez-Morales is a founding member of the National Committee for Biosafety, a risk evaluator and reviewer for the Mexico Ministry of Agriculture, coordinator of the Scientific Consultative Council for Biosafety, and a technical expert for the United Nations’ Global Environmental Facility. He has presented biosafety courses and workshops in Mexico, Kenya, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Chile, Italy, Egypt, Peru, and Colombia. He was the executive secretary of the Mexican government’s Intersecretarial Commission for Biosafety and Genetically Modified Organisms from 2007-2013. His current work at CINVESTAV focuses on biosafety and regulatory issues from an academic perspective.
